Designed and manufactured in New Zealand, Ethos Woodfires represent the evolution of the wood fire as a clean and efficient heating solution.

"It is such a fantastic fireplace. I am impressed with the lack of emissions it produces … I've been outside on quite a few occasions to see how much smoke was coming out of my chimney, and in all cases it was next to impossible to actually see any smoke whatsoever. I'm also very impressed with how easy it is to get the fire going. I only need a couple of handfuls of screwed up paper and a very minimal amount of kindling. It's virtually as easy as pressing a button. The efficiency of the burning is certainly apparent in the lack of ashes left behind. I haven't had to clean the fire out once yet, and I suspect I'll probably get through most of winter without emptying ashes. Certainly highly recommended and have given the fire glowing (pun intended) reviews to friends."
Peter S|Ethos Ares
"We have had our Ethos inbuilt fireplace for five years now. This is the most economical heat packing fireplace we have ever had. If installing another heater we would not look beyond using the same again. We have found a secret is to get it roaring and when there are plenty of hot embers keep the fuel up and shut the vent down to slow burn. We installed a heat transfer system in the house so it warms the rest of the house with ease."
Michael G|Ethos Ares
"My husband and I have to admit we had reservations about heat output after seeing the size of the wood box, but we needn't have had any doubts – this woodburner is excellent! We are now using half the wood we used before i.e. instead of three boxes per night, we are now using only one box. It truly just shows how inefficient our older woodburner was. We are very impressed."
Robyn L|Ethos Genesis
"I would like to thank everyone at Ethos for a great woodburner – I had hoped it would heat the living room and maybe the kitchen – well – it heats the whole house and there are no drafts! I am SO happy with the new burner – not only does it heat the house – the new Ethos uses a fraction of what the old open fire did AND gives out so much heat that two bedrooms off the hallway are wonderfully warm just by natural convection. I am also very happy knowing that my emissions from burning wood are as low as possible! For the first few nights we cooked dinner on the cook top just because we could! It was great! The burner burns so well there is very little ash – I am continually surprised at how little ash there is and at how well the wood burns – and am very pleased at the simple but smart innovation of bringing cold outside air from the outside therefore eliminating drafts!"
Nigel H|Ethos Genesis
"I was advised to buy an Ethos Fireplace after having numerous well known fireplaces over the years in houses we have owned. I was uneducated on these Fireplaces and uncertain but willing to purchase an Ethos on educated advice. After the first Fire my uncertainty was squashed and we are stoked with the efficiency and the amount of heat this fire produces. We purchased the Freestanding Phoenix to heat the upper level of our house which is 125 sqm and this fireplace does an amazing job at heating the entire level without having to install a heat transfer kit or opening a window to draw the heat through the house. We have gone from a very chilly house to a very toasty and comfy house. Thanks for the fantastic advice on helping us to get the best fireplace we have ever used!"
Clint & Lou G|Ethos Phoenix
"Our Ethos fire is absolutely amazing, it heats our small house (100sqm) so efficiently that we have every door in house open, all rooms are heated and toasty warm. In fact sometimes we have to open windows to cool down and be able to sleep. Thanks Ethos, you have made our winter so much more comfortable."
Jill & Peter F|Ethos Aquos

Draft Free Operation

How one fire can be warmer than another

Ethos woodfires are unique in that they don’t draw their combustion air from the room being heated, or even from elsewhere in the dwelling.Instead the EconAir Induction flue system is bi-directional, and draws all its combustion air from outside via the flue outer layer. The patented Ethos system has numerous advantages:

  • Eliminates cold drafts in the home

  • No need to vent the room in modern airtight design buildings

  • Incoming air is pre-heated by the exhaust gases to over 300°C creating greater combustion, higher efficiency and reduced emissions

  • No backpressure and quieter operation in windy areas

  • The fire burns brightly, for greater ambience

How Ethos Econair Flue System Works

Combustion air is drawn from outside the home, down the outer section of the flue system. The incoming air is pre-heated by the hot exhaust gases travelling up the centre of the flue system to over 300°C before entering the firebox.Using combustion air from outside keeps your warm air inside the home and eliminates the uncomfortable drafts often caused by conventional flue logburners. The EconAir bi-directional flue system will not interfere with other ventilation devices in your home, like extractor fans, range hoods, and home ventilation systems, reducing smoke blow back into the room, and wind noise.

perfect for modern airtight building designs

a smarter high output firebox

Ultra high temperature combustion air is force fed into three independent burn chambers at the rear of the firebox as well as one at the front.

Big things come in small packages

The combination of highly pre-heated combustion air and the specially designed Ethos firebox with four independent burn areas acts like a supercharger for burning wood.Nearly everything burns, from the solids and volatiles to the smoke itself. This is key to why our fires are so efficient at generating heat, and why their emissions are so low.

We regularly receive feedback from new owners amazed that they are getting so much heat from so few trips to the wood stack.Other fires billow smoke from their chimneys, but with an efficient Ethos your neighbours will be hard-pressed to tell your fire is going.Better for your fuel costs, better for the environment, and far less residual ash to clean in the morning. The fire also burns brightly, so you are rewarded with a more entertaining visual experience while you enjoy the heat.

Low Emission & High Efficiency

Affordable, Environmentally Friendly, Lower Emission Heat

Average Efficiency | 72%

Peak Output | 18kW

Low Emissions | 0.56 g/kg

That's our promise.

Burning correctly seasoned wood from sustainable resources, Ethos woodfires give an environmentally friendly and cost effective way to heat your space.Lower emissions ratings means Ethos woodfires are well below the strictest emission standards across both Australia and New Zealand.

Burning wood is considered carbon-neutral because it does not increase the amount of carbon dioxide cycling through the atmosphere.Carbon is continually cycling through all living plants and animals. Growing trees convert carbon dioxide to woody biomass, so carbons released from burning wood are actually processed naturally by growing trees and turned into more wood. It’s all part of a tree’s natural growth cycle.

To heat your whole home, not just your living room, having greater convective properties is a real advantage.

Moving the heated air means it can heat a larger area, and travel down hallways, around corners, and gets to those hard to reach cool areas that radiant heat alone just can’t heat up.

The Phoenix is designed to maximise its convection output by way of its clever inner and outer layer design. Air is drawn up between the firebox and the outer shell, and convected out from the top section into the room. It literally pumps the heat out.A highly convective wood fire is ideal if you are installing a heat transfer kit, to take the heat from your living room and pass it to other rooms in the house. Moving warm air is critical to the way heat transfer kits operate, and allows you to power your home heating solution with ease.Of course those in close range will also enjoy the lovely radiant properties from the Phoenix’s large glass window front, and an entertaining view of the bright burning high efficiency fire. With over 100 colour options the Phoenix brings a touch of class to any room.

Ethos Woodfires was founded in 2000 to assist reducing the air pollution problems in Christchurch, New Zealand; necessary as it appeared at the time the only option for the local council to reduce air emissions was to ban woodfires completely.

Christchurch experiences subzero winter temperatures, and the opposition to banning woodfires was strong, with fears that many would struggle to endure winter without them.Ethos Woodfire designer Paul Sintes decided he could design and build a cleaner wood fire than was then available, and he did exactly this, releasing the Genesis in 2001.Following the work he did in this region, in 2003 Paul Sintes received the shown Achievement Award from the Clean Air Society of Australia and New Zealand for the significant contribution to the improvement of air quality that Ethos fires made to the Christchurch area over this time.No other fire or designer in Australia and New Zealand has received this honour, it is an award we at Ethos Woodfires are very proud of.

Paul Sintes continues to design our Ethos models today.

Lighting Your Ethos Fire

The secret to achieving the best heat and efficiency out of your Ethos Woodfire is to get the fire up to operating temperature as quickly as possible.

Never operate the Ethos Woodfire with the door open – including at start up.Follow these steps to ensure quick and hassle free lighting.

You will need

  • 1x firelighter

  • About 12x to 15x sticks of dry kindling, approx 25mm diameter

  • 4x or more pieces of medium sized dry firewood, approx 65-70mm diameter

Steps

  1. Ensure the air control on the right hand side is in its fully open position (down).

  2. Position the firelighter in the centre front of the firebox just behind the door.

  3. Place 2x pieces of kindling from front to back alongside the firebricks.

  4. Build the kindling pile alternating crosswise and lengthwise as shown.

  5. Add 4x more pieces of medium sized dry wood across kindling, about level with the top of the firebricks.

  6. Light the firelighter and close the door immediately.

  7. Don't open the door to refuel the fire for approximately 20-30 minutes.

  8. Progressively add larger pieces of fuel to ensure a continued hot fire.

About Firewood

A piece of wood contains two totally different fuels which burn in quite different ways. The first parts to burn are the “volatiles”. These are the resins and creosotes which are converted to flammable gases and smoke by the heat of the fire. Volatiles contain almost all of the pollution content of the wood. The second part of the wood is the ember residue left after the volatiles have been burnt. This is charcoal, and it contains the major part of the heat content of the firewood. Charcoal burns easily and produces little if any pollution emissions.

If your Ethos Woodfire is operating correctly most of the volatiles will burn completely, however if the fire and the ember bed is not kept hot enough they will not burn completely and exit via the flue as unpleasant chimney smoke pollution.Take care to operate your fire so that it does not smoke and you will actually gain more heat from your firewood.

Use the correct fuel and you will maximise the efficiency of your low emission Ethos woodfire
